My name is Betsy and after many years and careers, I discovered watercolors.

I had messed around with acrylics and other mediums for many years but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I tried watercolors. I was living in a house that was clean and mostly white and had acquired two boisterous very furry white puppies. I had fears they would chomp into tubes of acrylic paints and turn my life into a giant finger painting. With that I decided to try watercolors as they were washable.

People are led to believe that watercolors are difficult and that you only have one chance to get it right. I’ve found that to be the furthest from the truth. My style is somewhat realist, and involves layering many colors, tones and tints until I get exactly what I like. This technique gives depth to the painting and shadows and surprises that is often not seen. This style works very well with dog portraits as there is so much depth in the fur, eyes and features of a dog, it’s really the only way to make them want to jump off the page.
I’m now tackling larger projects up to 18″x24″ and preparing for an art show. This is also a good time for you to have a portrait done as those prices will soon escalate. I love painting children but have also done couples and adults.

Here’s an example of the steps I use to get the undertones and vibrance in a painting. A work in progress…
I also enjoy painting boats as I have a deep love for water. Landscapes are few and far between and I’ve painted quite a lot of food, mostly commissions, including onions, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, cherries, cookies, cocktails, melons and more. Houses are also something I’ve done for both realtors and home sellers and buyers. It’s a wonderful way to remember a childhood home.

Interested in a Commission?
Having an original (not digital) picece of artwork of your loved ones or memories of places and things, is not as expensive as you’d think. I’ve found if I focus on 9″x12″ paintings, they can be easily mailed and the price often times is under $100. I also do larger and smaller, but 9″x12″ has been the most popular so far. Take a look at some of the commissions I’ve had the privilege to paint.

Come meet me Saturday, Dec 13, 2025 from Noon to 6 pm in Tulsa at the Edison Studios at 4040 West Edison. While the outside looks like an abandoned gas station — what you’ll find inside will amaze you. It’s the home studio for several very popular Tulsa artists and how lucky am I to get to spend a few hours in their company. I’ll have lots of cards and mugs as well as original watercolors of all sizes — perfect place to do some holiday shopping!
